Project
Developed as part of INTERCIDEC 2025, a design contest promoted by @frajumar_oficial, MAREA is a compact hotel suite conceived as a living and transformable interior, ranked among the top 10 proposals.
The project explores the contemporary hotel room as an adaptive environment rather than a fixed typology. Inspired by the movement of the tides, the suite shifts between three spatial conditions — a relaxed lounge, a meeting room, and a sleeping area — allowing the same interior to respond to different moments of the guest’s stay.
Rather than adding independent functions to a limited space, MAREA absorbs them into a continuous architectural system. A full-height boiserie becomes the main spatial device: bed, desk, storage, kitchenette, library, and concealed accesses are integrated within a single material surface, maintaining visual continuity while enabling multiple uses.
Integrated boiserie / Hidden functions
The boiserie operates as a container of possibilities. Its apparently continuous wooden surface conceals a fold-away bed, storage units, a work area, and a hidden kitchenette, allowing the room to expand or contract according to use.
When closed, the wall system restores the suite to a calm and uncluttered lounge. When opened, it reveals the functional layers required for sleeping, working, meeting, or preparing a drink. The furniture is therefore not treated as a set of added objects, but as an architectural infrastructure in which function is absorbed into form.
Materiality / Perception
The material palette is defined by natural wood, durable surfaces, mirrored panels, soft, integrated lighting, and concealed mechanisms. These elements reinforce a sense of continuity, calm, and precision, while responding to the durability required by hospitality interiors.
Mirrored surfaces expand the perception of depth, while the concealed bathroom door and hidden kitchenette introduce a sequence of small discoveries. The room is designed not only to optimise space, but to create a quiet sense of transformation.
In MAREA, furniture becomes architecture, and the hotel room becomes a fluid interior: a compact suite capable of shifting between rest, work, meeting, and retreat without losing coherence.
MAREA is organised around three main configurations.
In the lounge layout, the room becomes an open and relaxed living area, where the concealed bed and integrated storage free the central space. In the meeting configuration, the suite transforms into a compact professional environment, with a central table and access to the kitchenette. In the sleeping layout, the fold-away bed emerges from the boiserie, turning the same room into an intimate and fully equipped suite.
This flexibility allows the guest to inhabit the space actively, choosing how the room should perform throughout the day.
